Geek Week

Singing along to: Better Than Ezra, Cry in the Sun

My mom and my brother are away at work camp for the week with our church, so my dad and I have the house to ourselves. I've declared it "geek week," although we really didn't plan our Netflix list far enough in advance to make it really live up to that name. For instance, there has been no Babylon 5 or Star Trek. How lame are we?!

Last night, though, we watched Starship Troopers, which pretty much made up for the fact that we haven't done anything else geeky. I know that everybody else in the world has probably already seen this movie, but it was my first time.

Holy crap, it was awesome. Let's review the ways in which it was awesome:

-Wooden dialogue & acting? CHECK & CHECK.

-Run-of-the-mill sci-fi plot? CHECK.

-A world populated entirely by beautiful young people? CHECK.

-Insectoid, green-blooded aliens who have it in for the human race? CHECK.*

-Gratuitous amounts of human and alien blood and body parts strewn willy-nilly? CHECK TIMES INFINITY.

-Approximately twenty-five million explosions? CHECK.**

Put all of these facts together and what do you have? An equation for the perfect cheesy science fiction movie, that's what.

*The aliens actually suck people's brains out. Sweet!

**(Trivia: "More ammunition was used in this film than any previous movie." Thanks, IMDb.)

Also (and this sort of continues on the theme of geek), you may notice that this blog now has its own domain name. My plan was to get a domain name and hosting as a graduation gift to myself. It's a nice plan, but I was struck by the fear that such a perfect domain name would be gone, gone, gone by the time May of 2009 rolls around. So I snapped that up (and for under $10/year, it's not so fiscally irresponsible) and I'll switch to my own hosting and a Wordpress blog or something upon my graduation. Self-indulgent and dumb? Yes. But that pretty much sums up the blogosphere anyway, doesn't it?

Anyway, don't worry about updating your bookmarks if you don't want to; Blogger forwards everything automatically.
